In a couple of weeks, I'm going to be near KBLM (Monmouth Executive) and
I'm hoping to fly down in our club's Garmin 530-equipped P28B Dakota.
Normally when I'm flying the Dakota, I just file direct and get ready for
a re-route, but somehow I don't think that's going to fly in that part of
the country. So I was wondering what a good strategy for flight planning
would be.

When I ask Aeroplanner for an airways route, it gives me KROC GEE v147 LVZ
40deg53.25N 75deg31.40W BEERS SBJ KBLM. That's kind of strange, but I
guess that's becaused of all the unusable sectors on ABE making V613 to V6
unusable for non-GPS equipped aircraft. I wonder if I should file LVZ
v613 ABE v6 SBJ instead. Or maybe I should file direct to RBV, since it's
an IAF for several of the approaches?

What do people who fly into that airspace all the time do?

Flightaware.com, the website that provides free IFR flight tracking, also
provides common, ATC-accepted IFR routes between airports. It doesn't always
help since sometimes it only shows IFR routing for the kerosene burning
aircraft and other times doesn't have any recent routes, but it is a good
start for those parts of the country where "direct to" doesn't work. I always
start here.

Also, when flying from central NY to the west side of Manhattan, I have
discovered that ATC wants you on this route. I have received this from
Syracuse and Buffalo (the two times I received it from Buffalo I was able to
cancel and go VFR, since that route added 30 minutes to the trip):

HNK V167 WEARD V489 COATE

How you get to Hancock VOR is dependent on the departure airport - from
Syracuse it is V273.

It will probably "fly" in the sense of being able to launch, but it
will be as inefficient as all the other times when you file direct but
get a reroute anyway.

I don't qualify ("all the time"), but FWIW, I file as if the /G did
not enter into it, and only take advantage of that (requesting direct
this or that) if the actual circumstances allow.

Check out some of the Terminal Enroute Control routes in the AF/D.

You'll most likely see some variant of FJC V149 MAZIE V147 ARD V276
RBV.

Thanks, that's very helpful. I'll file GEE v252 CFB v149 MAZIE v147 ARD
v276 RBV.

There is no substitute for good manners, except, perhaps, fast reflexes.
